While holding his daughter Rebecca's hand, an angel in heaven, James Allan "Jim" Deters, 69, a resident of Bettendorf, entered into eternal peace, free from pain on September 20, 2013 at Genesis West. Funeral services for Jim will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25th Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, with Rev. Brian Akker officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park, where military honors will be conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of American #299. Memorials may be made to his family.

Jim was born in Davenport in 1944, the son of Freddie "Fritz" and Jean Deters. Jim married Sharon Gillaspie on September 14, 1968; they had just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

Jim attended West High School and was a letterman in basketball graduating in 1962. Jim was employed at ALCOA for two years before entering the US Army in 1965. He played military baseball in Seoul Korea while in the service with the EASCOM Frontiersmen team. Jim was honorably discharged from the service in 1971. Jim was best known for his baseball talents, and played with various teams in Davenport.

Jim spent his working career at Davenport Water Company, now known as Iowa American Water Company from 1968, until his retirement in 1999. In 2003 they moved to Ferryville, WI where Jim had been going for the past 30 years for fishing. Jim enjoyed hunting, working in his yard, gardening and fishing. He most precious time was that spent with his family, grandchildren, his fishing buddies and telling fish stores. Jim and Sharon returned to Bettendorf this past November.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sharon; daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Schmell of Bettendorf; a son, Shawn (Chrissy) Deters of Moline; grandchildren, Samantha and Kayla Schmell, Logan, Austin, and Caylee Deters; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Bailey Rose.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca; his parents; father and mother-in-law, Elmer and LaVerna Reaves; sister and brother-in-law, Richard and Karen Fritz; sister-in-law, Carolyn Gillaspie; sister, Joanne Noth; brother, Gerald Deters; and niece, Kari Deters.
