John Riepe, 91, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at UnityPoint Health Trinity, Bettendorf, IA. Services in celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, January 24, 2014 at the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, 1200 Middle Road, with the Rev. Troy Winder officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM until time of service at the church. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be presented by American Legion Post #26, Davenport.
Memorials may be made to Bettendorf Rotary Foundation, for scholarships, or to Davenport Central High School Music Department. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting his family with arrangements.
John Frederick Riepe was born in 1922 in Burlington, Iowa to Alfred H. and Lelah A. Riepe. After his high school graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he began his career as John Riepe Insurance, serving as a life insurance agent for Connecticut Mutual. He developed a concept for providing group insurance (life, health and long term disability) to employers. In 1960, he formed the entity of Riepe, Buchanan and Piper, Inc. John Riepe, John Buchanan and Jospeh Piper flew across the state of Iowa in John's airplane, serving more than 700 clients. The international company of Marsh & McLennan became aware of the RBP success. In 1973, the Acquisition Agreement and Plan of Reorganization between Riepe, Buchanan & Piper, Inc. and Marsh & McLennan Corporation went into effect. The three partners were Vice Presidents of Marsh & McLennan Corporation until their retirements.
John was active in the community, holding positions in Rotary, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Gyro International, the Chamber of Commerce and several other local organizations.
His love for aviation began while he served in the Navy, but continued throughout his lifetime. He developed an Ultralight airplane company, a totally new sensation of flying with more freedom in the cockpit. Over the course of his life, he was known as an influential businessmen in the area. Other than his passion for business, he loved his family and supported them in their endeavors. He also dearly loved his dog, Petey.
A golf enthusiast throughout his life, John enjoyed golfing at Short Hills Country Club, Cove Cay in Florida and more recently at Crow Valley in Davenport.
On July 7, 1946, he married Mary Stein. She preceded him in death. On March 31, 1988, John and Mary E. Pogue were married in Davenport.
His immediate survivors include his wife, Mary, Davenport; his son, Jim Riepe of Ozark, MO; daughters, Carolyn Gabrilson and Jane Goff, both of Davenport. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.
