John “Cliff” Nelson, age 91, of Eldridge, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in Davenport. Memorial services in celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, February 18, 2017 at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 4209 W. Locust Street in Davenport. Inurnment will be at a later date in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be presented. Memorials may be made to New Hope Presbyterian Church or Eldridge American Legion Post #639. Weerts Funeral Home is assisting his family with arrangements.

Cliff was born in 1925 in Birmingham, Iowa to George and Grace Nelson. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Navy as an Aviation Machinist's Mate. On October 6, 1951 Cliff was united in marriage to Donna Gerdts at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Davenport.

Cliff worked as an electrical technical supervisor with ALCOA for 33 years, retiring in 1983. His memberships included New Hope Presbyterian Church of which he was a Ordained Deacon, a ruling Elder, and a charter member. He also participated with the Davenport Elks Club, Eldridge American Legion Post #639 and the ALCOA retirees club. Cliff enjoyed reading, especially about the Civil War and aviation history. He loved yard work, flower gardening and caring for the wild birds in is back yard.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; daughters, Holly Tappendorf and Shelley Simon, both of Eldridge; and Tracey Bailey of Davenport; sons, John and Cheryl Nelson of NM, and Mark and Teresa Nelson of MI; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents George and Grace, and a brother, Edward.

Memorial contributions should be made to the New Hope Presbyterian Food Pantry and/or the Eldridge American Legion Post #639.
