Tom Peterson, 62, of Bettendorf, IA, died Saturday, March 18, 2017 at his home from complications of a recently diagnosed lung condition. Those who knew Tom understand what a loss this is. Simply stated, he was the most generous and kind-hearted person you’ll ever meet. The good news is that Tom was always truly happy, and lived the life he wanted right to the end.

Want to be entertained? Ask Mike Crane about the two of them working at a factory in Milwaukee, making no money but always hitting the brewery tours on Friday for free beer. Ask Gary Shapley about their Lake Tahoe stint where they had great adventures and Tom came home two years later with literally one penny in his pocket. Or, ask his brother about having to bail him out of jail at 2:00 a.m. for “mooning a cop” with the only currency available—travelers checks earmarked for an upcoming business trip.

But, if you really want a good story, ask about Tom and a friend’s ill-conceived idea of rafting down the Mississippi River to St. Louis (they felt their original plan to get to New Orleans may be too ambitious) only to wind up 5 days later in jail in Muscatine. Best police conversation of the century—Officer, “Where is your car”. Tom—“We don’t have a car” Officer, “How did you get here?” Tom—“By raft”.

A well-known carpenter, Tom’s life was based on helping others, whether it be a family member or a client. Always with a smile and always with an unmatched work ethic. He was a great guy and was tremendously proud of his two children, Sean and Kari.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 3-7:00 pm Wednesday, March 22nd at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, where he was a volunteer.

Tom was born in 1954 in Minneapolis, MN to Myron and Eleanor Peterson. He married Brenda Lockwood on May 6, 1982, who survives him and lives in Bettendorf. They divorced in 2014. He owned and operated Peterson Custom Builders, Davenport. He also was a Green Bay Packers fan and an avid golfer.

Survivors include his daughter Kari Peterson of Bettendorf; son Sean Peterson of Riverdale, IA; and brothers Clair (Cheri) Peterson of Bettendorf and David (Valerie) Peterson of Canton, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
