Darwin Harvey Paulsen, 81, of Durant, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 28th, 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, surrounded by his family. Services in celebration of his life will be held at10:30 am Saturday, April 1st at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 606 4th Avenue, Durant, IA. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Friday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Burial will be in the Durant Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #430, of which he was a past commander, or to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Mr. Paulsen was born in 1935 in Davenport, Iowa to Harvey and Melinda Paulsen. He attended Durant schools, graduating in 1953. In 1952, he enlisted in the US Naval Reserves in Davenport and served in active duty in the US Navy from 1954 until 1956, last serving on the USS Casa Grande. He started farming in 1956 and continued farming for 60 years. For 33 years he also owned and operated Paulsen Produce. He worked at various times for a seed dealer, Kinze Manufacturing, Tri State Travel and Amhof Trucking.

He married Sandi Wolf in 1958 and later married Deanna Gehrls in 2004. He served on the church council of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Durant; was a past Master and 50 year member of the Wilton Masonic Lodge; member of the Muscatine County Cattleman’s Association and Muscatine County Pork Producers; and the Fulton County 4H Club.

Survivors include his wife Deanna; children Shelley (Doug) Lincoln of Stockton IA, Darcy (Pat) Cowan of Ankeny IA, Bart (Linda) of Stockton IA and Kayla (Jim) Ruter of Shannon IL; grandchildren Tad (Marissa) Lincoln, Nate (Kelly) Lincoln, Joel Lincoln, Jana (Ben Gauthier) Lincoln, Phillip (Nikki) Cowan, Gregory (Breanna) Cowan, Stephen Cowan, Kelli Paulsen, Katelyn (Aaron) Ellenberg, Kyle (Hannah) Paulsen, Kurt Paulsen, Jared Ruter, Taylor (Drew) Carroll, and Clayton Ruter; five great-grandchildren; eight step-children; ten step-grandchildren; sister Elaine Lorenzen of Lenexa, KS; brother Roland (Verna) Paulsen of Davenport, IA; and a brother-in-law Verne Schlapkohl of Durant, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Lois Schlapkohl.
