Becky Jo (Atkinson) Stamer of Bettendorf passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 after a valiant battle with a mythical dragon and lung cancer. She was sent up to the spirit in the sky at Genesis East Medical Center, comforted by her loving husband Frederick. A funeral Mass will be held at 4 pm Sunday, April 30th at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 121 West 12th St., Davenport. Her family will greet friends Sunday in the Great Hall of Trinity from 2-4:00 pm. All our welcome to celebrate Becky’s life in the Great Hall after the service. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Gilda’s Club or to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting her family with arrangements.

Becky was born in 1953 in Kirksville, Missouri to Robert and Alma Atkinson. She was lucky enough to be raised most of her life as an Iowan. She was raised in Davenport, where she met the boy next door and love of her life, Frederick Stamer. She graduated from Central High School in the first class that allowed women to wear pants. She attended Marycrest College to share her life-long love of art by becoming an art teacher. Along with Fred, Becky raised four boys and a miraculous baby girl who was just so much easier to handle after all those boys.

As an artist, she never failed to freak out one of her five children with her latest art project. Her memorable, poster-sized, black with white chalk self-portrait ever watched her five children in the Stamer home. She was a feisty woman, even after her diagnosis with cancer. Recently during our mini-reunion, as she sat and talked to her family, she was still Mom, Grandma, Becky, or Beck.

She passed away, leaving so many people behind that continue to love her. The world will miss someone who made things just a bit better - through her spirituality, through the years of teaching kids art, through her smiles. She taught in North Scott schools for 22 years, at both Virgil Grissom and Alan Shepard Elementary Schools. She was as a teacher as she was a mother – tough, yet fair. She loved her family, friends, and students.

Survivors include her husband Frederick; their children Trenton (Kate) Stamer of Orion, IL, Andrew (Jennifer) Stamer of Oakton, VA, Alexander (Justine) Stamer of Bettendorf, Reid (Nikki) Stamer of Coralville, IA and Anna Stamer of Denver, CO; grandchildren Clara Stamer, Marley Stamer, Harper Stamer, Ella Stamer, Logan Krolikowski, Seth Krolikowski, Mayla Stamer and Zola Stamer; her parents Robert and Alma Atkinson of Queen City, MO; and sisters Brenda (Sidney) Sidwell of Queen City, MO and Jani Atkinson of Kirksville, MO. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Zoe Stamer.
