Jean I. Meinert, 96, of Davenport, IA, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, May 22nd at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be held from1-3 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Davenport, Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House or Davenport Lutheran Home.

Jean was born September 10, 1920 in rural Scott County. Her parents were Raymond and Anna Johnston Madden. She graduated from Davenport High School in June 1939. She attended one semester at St. Ambrose College. She then taught five years in one room schools in northern Scott County during WW II.

On February 18th, 1945, Jean was united in marriage to the love of her life, Ralph E. Meinert at the Long Grove Christian Church. Jean and Ralph were married for 42 years. She was a proud farm wife for 30 years on the family farm located just east of Maysville. Her hobbies were sewing, embroidery, crocheting, gardening, cooking, and volunteering. She enjoyed traveling with Ralph, and then friends after his passing, on many wonderful trips.

Over the years, she volunteered at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, CASI, Buchanan School- “Listen To Me Read” program. She also taught a young man to read and write in the Literary Program at Eastern Iowa Community College. At First Christian Church, Davenport, she was an Elder and taught Sunday School for 20 years. She served as President of the Disciples Women’s Club, sewed many projects for Church World Service, and received the Elder Emeritus Award. As a parent, she was a leader for 4H and Cub Scouts. She also made and donated baby quilts for the local Neonatal Intensive Care units at our local hospitals.

She is survived by her children Michael (Susan) Meinert of rural Maysville and Debra (Dwight) Gaston of rural Donahue; grandchildren Kevin (Vickie) Meinert of Rolling Meadows, IL, Keri Meinert of Maysville, IA, Douglas (Catherine) Gaston of San Mateo, CA and David (Lori) Gaston stationed in England with the U.S. Air Force; great-grandchildren Ava, Bella, Alexander, Collin, Katharina, Kassandra, Taylen and Harrison; and her many nieces and nephews whom she adored. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; brothers Ralph (Eleanor), Clyde (Ruth), Roy (Elaine) Madden; sisters Ruth (Bob Coffin), Vera (Ray Ambrose); and sister-in-law Grace (Bill Grisham); and nephews Bob and Paul Madden and Jay Coffin.
