Barbara J. Morris, 82, of Davenport, IA, died peacefully with her family by her side on May 21, 2017. She was born in 1934 in St. Paul, MN to Leslie and Edna (Helmer) Anderson. She moved to Milwaukee as a young girl and graduated from Shorewood High School in 1952 and from Lawrence University in 1956 with a B.A. in History. Barbara married William Morris in 1959 in Milwaukee and they moved to Rockford, IL in 1960. They made many lifelong friends in Rockford. Barbara loved art and received a Masters degree in Art History in 1985. She worked as the gallery director at Rockford College and was honored to serve on both the Rockford Arts Council and the Illinois Arts Council. She also chaired the first Beattie Is... summer arts festival in Rockford in 1973. Barb and Bill spent most of their retirement years together living in Milwaukee. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage. After Bill’s death in 2007, Barbara reconnected with a friend, Ken Griffith, and they spent a number of happy years together in Lake Forest, IL. We will miss her fun and adventurous spirit, artistic views, kind ways and classy style. Barbara also cherished her relationships with dear French friends. She is survived by her daughter Carrie Bowman (Jerry) of Davenport, IA and son John Morris (Leah) of Needham, MA and her seven grandchildren: Madeline and Sarah Bowman, Taylor, Callen, Bennett, Lawson and Layne Morris, her loving friend Ken Griffith, sister-in-law Jo Morris and dearly loved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Betsy Anderson, brother-in-law Jim Morris and niece, Jane Snow. The family would like to thank the caring staff in Assisted Living at Senior Star as well as Genesis Palliative Care. The funeral will be August 18, 2017 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rockford, IL. Memorial donations may be made to the Figge Art Museum or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
