Bruce M. Bates, 64, of Davenport, IA, died unexpectedly Tues., June 13, 2017 at Genesis East, Davenport. Memorial services in celebration of his life will be held at 10 am Saturday, June 24th at Zion Lutheran Church, 1216 W. 8th St., Davenport, with Pastor Karen Ullestad officiating. A memorial gathering will be held from 4-7:00 pm Friday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities.

Bruce was born in 1953 in Iowa City, and adopted into the hearts of Monroe and Alice Bates of Glidden, IA ten months later. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Glidden-Ralston High School in 1971. He then attended Dana College, in Blair, NE, where he graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1975. While attending Dana, he met Roseanne Petersen, and they were married on July 2, 1977 in Council Bluffs, IA. They made their home in Davenport, where he taught at Garfield Elementary School for 41 years, having retired one year ago. He loved teaching and was greatly invested in his students, taking great pride in their progress and accomplishments. Bruce served on several DCSD committees. He received his Masters in Computer Applications from Marycrest College in 1991. Music was also a big part of his life and he played the hand bells and sang with the choir of Zion Lutheran Church. At home, he enjoyed sharing recipes with his friends and spending time with his cats. He also enjoyed John Deere tractors, baking, and his former part-time work at Popcorn Charlie & Co. and Teacher’s Aide.

Survivors include his wife Roseanne; sons Nicholas (Lisa) Bates of Davenport, Nathan (Natalie) Bates of Moline and Nelson (Allison) Bates of Iowa City; and grandson Gavin Bates. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Anne Bates in 1988, his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Ken and Doris Petersen, and an infant twin brother.
