Dr. Gilbert Schmiedel, 81, of Davenport, most recently of Palmer Hills, Bettendorf, passed away Saturday, the 29th of July 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, in the presence of friends. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, August 5th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, where friends will gather at 9 am for visitation until time of service. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Schmiedel Scholarship Fund or to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Gilbert Otto Schmiedel, Jr. was born in 1936 in Harrisburg, PA to Harriet and Gilbert Otto Schmiedel, Sr. He graduated from Marshalltown High School, Marshalltown, IA in 1954. From 1954 to 1956 he studied pre-med at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. He married the love of his life, Arlene Ann Linsenmeyer, in Marshalltown, IA on Friday, December 30, 1955. After graduation from Iowa State Teachers College, he began preparing for his life’s work when he enrolled at the Palmer School of Chiropractic. In 1959 Gil graduated from Palmer and in 1960 he became a licensed chiropractor and opened his private practice in Iowa the same year. He and Arlene hosted many student parties and picnics at their home. He removed a subluxation from his last patient in 2015.

Gil joined the Iowa National Guard, serving from 1959-1965. While in the Guard he was Chief of Medical Section from 1961-1965. He was honorably discharged. In 1963 Gil joined the technique faculty of Palmer College of Chiropractic. He became a Professor of Anatomy in 1977. After serving in many capacities and receiving several awards during his tenure at Palmer, Gil retired in 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents. The love of his life, Arlene, passed in 2012.
