In retirement he enjoyed following the sporting events of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and also followed the Chicago Bulls, Bears, and Cubs. He was thrilled to see his beloved Cubs win the World Series in 2016.
