Alan Robert Hamilton, 91, of Davenport passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Home after an extended illness.
Services in celebration of his life will be held at 11 am Wed., October 18th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, with Rev. Ron Huber officiating. Mr. Hamilton’s family will greet friends from 10 am until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park where military honors will be presented. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Mr. Hamilton was born in Davenport on July 11, 1926 to Claude and Vilma (Diedrich) Hamilton. He graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1944 and served in the United States Navy during the last year of World War II.
After his naval service, Mr. Hamilton earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1950, and then joined the General Electric Company at Schenectady, New York. After a few years at GE, he returned home to Iowa and began his long career at Collins Radio Company (now Rockwell Collins) in Cedar Rapids. During his early years at Collins, Mr. Hamilton earned an MSEE in 1961 from the University of Iowa. For the rest of his life he would experience divided loyalties on CyHawk game days. While at Collins, among many other things, he participated in the early development of Global Positioning System technology, and he was proud to see that technology perfected by others to become part of our daily lives. Mr. Hamilton retired from Rockwell Collins in 1991, after nearly four decades of service.
He was dedicated to his family and to his church, St. Paul’s Lutheran of Davenport, and was involved in the church’s activities until the last few months of his life.
Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Harrison Kline, and his nephew Steven Kline. He is survived by his sister, Maxine Kline of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; his nephews Alan (Sharon) Kline of Des Moines, Iowa and Christopher (Robin) Kline of Seattle, Washington; and his great-nephew James Kline, of Seattle.
