Fairelna “Ellie” Arp, 93, of Davenport, IA, passed away Thursday, October 26th, 2017 in The Gardens at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.
Ellie was born in 1924 in Lepanto, Arkansas to William J. and Burnice Bryan. Her beloved sister, Louella Thompson, preceded her in death in 1982. Ellie is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Don Arp; her son, Steve (Stephanie) Arp; daughter Libbi Moriarty; grandchildren, Ben (Kira Pasquesi) Arp, Maureen (Jarred) Hodgden, Patrick Moriarty and Sarah (Eric) Neer; great grandson Elliott Hodgden; and nephew Michael (Millie) Thompson.
Ellie attended Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas. She moved to New York City in 1943 to live with her sister and brother-in-law. Ellie proudly served in the US Coast Guard in 1944 and moved to Davenport in 1947. While attending AIC Business School, she met her future husband, Don. They married in 1949 and had two children, Steve and Libbi. Ellie also worked in various purchasing and administrative roles for many years, retiring from Nichols Homeshield in 1989 as their purchasing agent.
A tough competitor, Ellie enjoyed puzzles and card games, especially bridge. She loved bridge tournaments and was a favorite playing partner of many friends over the years. She was an active member of Tri T. She also enjoyed golfing in Door County, Wisconsin and fishing in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Ellie was a devoted mother and grandmother, enjoying nothing more than snuggling with a grandchild on her lap to read a story. She was a wonderful hostess, entertaining friends and family with marvelous meals, great company and lots of laughter.
Her long and happy life included many joys and successes. In recent years, she was challenged by Alzheimer ’s disease but never lost her kindness and gratitude for her caregivers. Her sweet smile will be missed by many. Memorial services to celebrate her life will be held at 10:30 am Sat., Nov. 11th at Koning Chapel, Ridgecrest Village, Davenport where her family will greet friends from 9 am until time of service. A private inurnment will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be conducted. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Ridgecrest Foundation – Koning Charitable Fund, or to the Alzheimer’s Association local chapter. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Ridgecrest staff and administration. A special thank you to the wonderful team in The Gardens who lovingly cared for Ellie during the past several years.
