John M. Willard, 74, of Davenport, IA, passed away Monday, October 30th, 2017 at his home. Services in celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 am Friday, November 3rd at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, with Rev. John Grebner officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 am until time of service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, of which he was an active member.

John was born in 1943 in Oak Park, Illinois to Kester and Mildred Willard. He served with U.S. Army in Intelligence. He married Carol Ellen Turney on April 24, 1971. John was a journalist with the Quad City Times, retiring after 34 years. After his retirement he continued as a free-lance writer. John had an intense curiosity, cared about people and was especially compassionate toward retired military veterans. He volunteered with visits to veterans at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House and other hospice facilities, interviewing these veterans for their stories. He then wrote up the stories and returned with the printed story, a certificate and pin, which he presented to the veteran with their family present. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and was instrumental in the church’s “Sleep Sacks” for the homeless program.

Survivors include his wife Carol; brother Thomas (Donna) Willard of Moscow PA; and sister-in-law Bonnie Feekin of Council Bluffs IA.
