Glenn “Murph” Thomas, 97, of Davenport, passed away Sunday, November 5th at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 11th at 11am at St. John’s United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10-11am at the church.
Glenn was born on August 17, 1920 to Asa and Mamie Thomas in Logan, Iowa. He graduated from Logan High School and went on to the University of Iowa, earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1947 and his Master’s degree in 1964. He proudly served his country during World War II with the United States Army Air Corp from 1942-1945 and was stationed in Italy from 1944-1945. When he returned from his service, Glenn married Joann Hamilton, they had two sons. She passed away in 1975. He later married Ruth Gaines in 1978, she passed away in 2016.
Glenn taught at numerous schools throughout Iowa, retiring from the Davenport School District. He was an avid volunteer with the Friendly Thrift Center and the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. He was a former member of the Moose Club, the Elks Lodge and the Masons. He enjoyed golfing with the Retirees Golf Club, gardening, cooking for friends and family, and telling stories every chance that he got.
He is survived by his two sons: Michael (Anne) Thomas and John Thomas; two step-sons: Kenneth Casey (Sara) Gaines and John Gaines; grandchildren: Andrew (Ilene) Thomas, Dan (Emily) Thomas, Joseph Thomas, Gustaf Gaines, and Jessica Gaines; two great-grandchildren; his sister Bonita Price; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Joann, his second wife Ruth, his parents, and eight siblings.
In lieu of flowers, any gifts you choose to make to the Handicapped Development Center, Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, or the Friendly Thrift Center will be greatly appreciated.
