Rodger Benton Butler, 71, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on December 3rd, 2017. Rodger spent his formative years with many close friends and family in Fort Madison, IA. As an adult, the Quad-Cities became home where he and wife Janice worked, lived and raised their four daughters Laura, Sara, Jeni and Mande.

Rodger was a beloved husband of 52 years, mischievous brother, adored father and the most famous “Papa” around to his grandkids. Rodger’s full life cannot be easily summed up and includes great memories of hard work, hours in his woodshop, lively gatherings, travel adventures, and many sunny days floating in the pool.

Always known for his stories, laughter and compassionate spirit, Rodger will be truly missed. He will be fondly remembered by his remaining family which includes wife Janice (Calvert); children Laura Bielfeldt (Jon), Sara Slagle (Mark), Jeni Michelson (Brad), Mande Butler (Andrew La Fontaine); grandchildren Dalton, Joselyn, Landon, Benton, Chloe, Dylan, Natalie; siblings Monte Butler (Martha), Kirk Butler (Kathy), Vicki Slater (Dale Pezley), Scott Butler (Dawn); extended family “Cookie” Butler, Betty Hunold (Ron), Audrey Dietsch, Daril Hill, H.B. Calvert (Jan); numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends from far and wide. Preceding him are his parents, Frank and Virginia Butler, brother Gary Butler, sister in-law Lois Hill and niece Angie Hill.

Everyone who was fortunate to have known Rodger will agree that his passing is a great loss and true to his wishes, calls for a gathering to celebrate his life. Please join the family at The Black Watch Room (3851 195th St, Le Claire IA) on December 9th, from 10am - 2pm for an open house full of Rodger’s favorites: tacos, drinks, laughter, music and stories. A gathering and casual service will be led by his family at 2pm. In place of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Rodger’s name at the University of Iowa Community Credit Union (53rd Avenue branch) to benefit local charities.
