Marlene was born in Howard, South Dakota to George and Esther (Weishaupt) Gorath. She was united in marriage to Gene Marten on July 25, 1957 in Howard, South Dakota. The couple just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Marlene was a registered nurse completing her training at Methodist Kahler School of nursing in Rochester, Minnesota. She practiced nursing in Minnesota, South Dakota, Virginia, Arizona, and Iowa. She retired as Director of Nursing at the former Americana Nursing Center. She enjoyed traveling, butterflies, and playing cards with her dear friends.
The church was a big part of Marlene’s life. She inspired others with her willingness to volunteer and served in so many ways. She helped assemble the church bulletin, served on the stewardship and finance committee, alter guild, taught Sunday school, volunteered at pre-school and vacation bible school, and enjoyed being the wedding coordinator.
Family and friends will always remember how united Gene and Marlene were. Their closeness was an inspiration to anyone who knew them.
Survivors include her husband, Gene; daughter, Lori (Mark) Fedler of Iowa City; son, Glen (Shirley) Marten of Davenport; 2 grandsons, Evan Fedler and Dane Fedler; sister, Sharon Kommes of Howard, South Dakota; and a brother, Harlan (Larainne) Gorath of Fairmont, Minnesota.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents.
