Walter Howard ‘Steve” Ewing (Mayhorn) was born November 4, 1949 to Estella Harris and Walter Mayhorn in East St. Louis, IL. The name Steve came from his mother that wanted to name him Steve but decided to name him after his father.
His love and passion was the long jump which would eventually lead him to scholarships at St. Ambrose University in both basketball and Track and Field and he dubbed himself the “Longest Kid in the West”.
He met a young woman, which led to a year-long courtship and marriage to Melverdia Phillips September 25, 1971, and the couple had three children, Terra, Julian, and Elliot.
Shortly after, Steve began working for American Honda Motors, as a Parts Handler where the “Originals” met and became life- long friends retiring from Honda after 33 years of employment.
Steve continued to share his knowledge of track and field becoming coaching students to State and National meets while he continued competing into his 50’s in Masters track meets qualifying in National Meets in Long and Triple jump.
Steve shared his love to travel with his family out west to places such as Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, The Grand Canyon and other places of beauty.
After his retirement, Steve spent his time at home taking it easy with his wife, children and grandchildren in Orlando, Florida enjoying Walt Disney World and the beach life.
Both his father (Walter Mayhorn), step- father (Howard), and wife, (Melverdia), and son Julian precede Steve in death.
