Ann Marie Orlandea, 82 years of age, quietly passed away Sunday evening, January 21, 2018 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI, with her beloved husband, Nicky, beside her.

Born in Columbus, KS, June 21, 1935 to Lawrence Marvin and Leila Marguerite (Mehaffey) Wantland, she attended Hillsboro High School (IA) and earned her B.A. degree from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University), Kirksville, MO. Ann had four children with her first husband, Lee H. Roberts. She taught 2nd and 3rd grades in the North Mahaska Community School District (New Sharon, IA), Ankeny Community School District (Ankeny, IA), and Bettendorf Community School District (Bettendorf, IA). Later in life, Ann, while teaching at Jackson Elementary School (Bettendorf, IA) and raising her younger children, met Nicolae (Nicky) V. Orlandea, working for John Deere as an engineer at the John Deere Technical Center (Moline, IL). Ann and Nicky married September 9, 1977 in Bettendorf, IA. After retiring from education, she volunteered in Davenport elementary schools, volunteered at the Senior Women’s League, and proudly served as a board member of the Maternal Health Center from 1991 – 1997. Ann and Nicky lived in Bettendorf and Davenport, IA until 1997 when he retired from Deere. In August 1997, they moved to Ann Arbor and Nicky began teaching at the University of Michigan.

Ann greatly enjoyed reading and shared her love of literature with all four of her children, her granddaughter, two great grandchildren, and her classroom students. After retirement from teaching she continued to share this love of reading with as many children as possible by donning her special Dr. Seuss “Cat in the Hat” shirt and red-and-white striped tall top hat for reading Dr. Seuss books at nearby schools. She even took her show on the road and read to the lucky students in her granddaughter’s, Andrea’s, schools in Kansas City, MO and Overland Park, KS.

Ann and Nicky treasured their travel adventures throughout the world. Of the many destinations they visited, her favorites were Russia - where she marveled at the warmth of the Russian people as well as Russian art, history, and architecture; Japan – where she was duly impressed by the polite children, Japanese precision and cleanliness; New Zealand – with its varied and natural beauty; and always France – especially Paris for the culture and “just because”.

A lifelong appreciation of nature provided Ann with never-ending pleasure: family camping trips, flowers of all manner grown in her own garden, in botanical gardens worldwide, wildflowers in nature, as well as hummingbirds, wren song, the woods at Ann’s & Nicky’s Delhi, IA “Happy Barn”, cross-country skiing, sunrises, sunsets, gentle breezes, and so many other joys provided by Mother Nature.
While raising her family, Ann concentrating on making her children’s young lives as full of varying experiences and as carefree as possible.

Ann delighted in time shared with her family, counting time shared with Nicky, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as the most important blessings of her rich life.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents. Ann is survived by her husband, Nicky Orlandea; children: Julie Rolá (Paul) of Kansas City, MO, Jon Roberts (Linda) of Davenport, IA, Joe Roberts (Linda) of Lake Geneva, WI, Janet Copeland (Jerry) of Overland Park, KS; step-daughter, Delia Tamas-Orlandea of Mt. Prospect IL; step-son, Cosmin Orlandea (Mici) of Northville, MI; grandchildren: Andrea (Lattimer) Lewis, Alexa Orlandea, Nora Orlandea, and Nicholas Tamas-Orlandea; great grandchildren: Makaela Lewis and Caiden Lewis; her brother, Larry Wantland (Lonna); her pi sister, Sue (Wantland) Mason (Bob); nieces and nephews; and extended family members.

Ann, as wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend will be so very dearly missed
